DHARAMSHALA, October 15: Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC), the largest pro-independence group in exile has launched an “intensive lobbying campaign” aimed at putting pressure on China to end its “repressive policies” in Tibet, especially in the Ngaba region of eastern Tibet. TYC President Tsewang Rigzin and Finance Secretary Konchok Yangphel met with embassy officials of the United States, Germany, British, Poland and the European Union in the Indian capital New Delhi yesterday. The youth leaders presented detailed reports and pictures on the ongoing military clampdown in Kirti Monastery and Ngaba region and provided factsheets on the series of self-immolations that shook the entire region. New York based right group, Human Rights Watch, had revealed this week that “a ‘dramatic increase in security expenditure’ by the Chinese government in the Ngaba area has contributed to the ongoing ‘local discontent and unrest’”. Rigzin told Phayul that embassy officials “shared their strong concerns” on the crisis in Ngaba and promised to follow-up with their respective embassies in Beijing. “During the meetings, the embassy officials shared their strong concerns about the dire situation in Ngaba County and promised to forward the details to their respective governments and also their embassies in Beijing,” Rigzin said. The youth leaders said that they “will continue to lobby other embassy officials in the coming days”. “We will be specifically targeting the G20 countries appealing them to raise the Ngaba crisis with Chinese President Hu Jintao during or on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in France next month,” Rigzin said. As part of their intensive campaigning for the crisis in Ngaba, TYC also launched a websitewith online petitions and downloadable campaign materials. |
