DHARAMSHALA, November 2: After a spate of self-immolations inside Tibet, more than 200 Chinese intellectuals and independent writers from outside China as well as some from inside China have launched a signature campaign, condemning the Chinese repressive policies in Tibet.
"The policies of the Chinese government have made it difficult even for ordinary citizens to carry on their day to day life related with the religion and culture," said the intellectuals in a signed letter, copies of which will be submitted to the United Nations, the government of the United States and European Union.
"Since the Chinese officials have made the life in the monasteries so unbearable with unprecedented control and repression, the situation forced the young monks to set themselves on the fire, calling for freedom," said the letter.
Since March this year, ten Tibetans have set themselves on fire calling for freedom in Tibet and return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama from exile.
The newly elected Tibetan Prime Minister Lobsang Sangay, a Havard scholar known for his contacts with Chinese intellectuals and scholars has also expressed his discouragement to negotiate with the Beijing government, and to fulfill his promise to return His Holiness the Dalai Lama from exile.
Havard scholar Yang Jianli and few other intellectuals initiated the signature campaign aimed at ending the self-immolation crisis in Tibet.
Apart from the petition letter, three overseas based Chinese organisations – Germany based Federation for a Democratic China, US based Democratic Party of China, and Chinese Social Democratic Party have also released statements separately condemning the Chinese government for its repression in Tibet’s monastic institutions, particularly in the Ngaba region of Tibet.
