DHARAMSHALA, October 9: A group of 13 Tibetan college students were arrested earlier today for trying to enter the Chinese embassy in New Delhi. The seven girls and six boys were carrying Tibetan national flags and raising slogans for a free Tibet and demanding China end its repressive policies in Tibet. Just this month, three Tibetans set themselves ablaze in Ngaba, eastern Tibet, protesting Chinese rule over Tibet. The Tibetan college students, belonging to the regional chapter of the Tibetan Youth Congress, the largest pro-independence group in exile, stormed the heavily guarded Chinese embassy in view of a large contingency of national and international media. One of the protesters managed to climb a high security pole overlooking the Chinese embassy and unfurled a banner carrying images and names of Tibetans who have self immolated for Tibet’s cause. The boy was eventually overpowered by Indian police personnel. "The consecutive self immolation of Tibetans inside Tibet is a sign of Chinese repressive acts inside Tibet. Tibetans consider it more easier and honourable to burn themselves to ashes than to live under humiliating and oppressive imperialist China," said Choedon Lhamo, a Tibetan student who participated in the protest.

Earlier in the week, eight Tibetan students in Delhi sat on a week-long hunger strike seeking international intervention on the spate of self immolations inside Tibet. Meanwhile in Dharamshala, north India, hundreds of Tibetans and supporters lit candles yesterday evening to remember and pray for the self immolating Tibetans. Demanding the Chinese government to withdraw its troops from the Kirti Monastery in Ngaba, the organisers vowed to initiate "internationally coordinated campaigns to galvanise global pressure on the Chinese Government to end this military siege in Ngaba." Similar campaigns of solidarity and support for the self immolating Tibetans were held in front of the Chinese consulate in San Francisco on October 7 and at the European Parliament in Brussels on October6. |
